Rio’s South Zone

Sugarloaf Mountain

The tourist zone (South Zone) of Rio de Janeiro. Sugarloaf Mountain rises from Guanabara Bay. You can see the tram station on its top. Following the shore off to the left leads to the Central District (downtown).

Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado Mountain

Christo Redentor sits opposite Sugarloaf Mountain overlooking the South Zone and the bay. You can see a bit of Copacabana Beach on the far right.

Famous Beaches

Copacabana Beach is on the left and Ipanema Beach is on the right with a big lagoon in the middle.

Ipanema at Sunset

Ipanema Beach at Sunset

Morro Dois Irmaos (“Two Brothers Mountain”) sits at the far side of Ipanema. Favela Rocinha is located on its right flank and around the back side.

Ipanema & Two Brothers

A closer daytime picture. You can see the tiniest edge of Rocinha way around to the right of Two Brothers. Another large favela called Vitigal has climbed up its left flank above the beach.

It’s good that you don’t mind me telling you if you got anything wrong, because I’m in Breaking Dawn now and I saw that you wrote “reias” as our currency, but the name is actually “reais”. I just looked again and it’s wrong in New Moon to. Again, sorry if I’m being rude. And I should tell you that I really liked your writing style! So far everything is great!

Ack! I hate it when I make mistakes, especially spelling mistakes. Many Brazilians have read the stories on this website, but none has pointed out my errors, so I thank you, Julia. I haven’t been making updates to the website for quite a while as I’m working on other projects now, but if and when I get back to it, these will be the first fixes I make. All the best, -PAL

Hey, I’m reading your series and I’m brazilian. Would just like to let you know that when you write the name in portuguese it’s called: “Cristo Redentor” without the H. And the favela is called Vidigal with a D and not Vitigal with a T. Also, it’s favela da Rocinha. Not Favela Rocinha. I don’t mean to be rude. I just think you would like to keep your page the more right you can. I see that you really dedicated yourself to it, so I wanted to help. Let me know if you don’t like it.

Thank you so much for those language clarifications, Julia! It is difficult to research a place based on a language so different than one’s native tongue, as you undoubtedly know. I appreciate all the help I can get. 🙂
      All the best,
      -PA Lassiter

if you look closely in the movie Breaking Dawn Part 1 and New Moon you can see Christ the Redeemer in the background.
